This Xmas, your 6-year-old probably begs for a Nintendo DS, Wii, Xbox Kinect or PS3, but you prefer Lego, Meccano or Buzz Lightyear. Follow Santa's advice.

To buy a Christmas present for your six-year-old boy can form quite a challenge for parents and especially mums. Toys with an educational value that stimulate imaginative play and responsibility and good old board games are rejected as boring. Cute toys such as Thomas the Tank engine and Disney Cars are stacked away in their box. Even though Transformers, Bakugan and Pokemon still go on their adventures and battles, they get fierce competition of - big boys toys - !

Nintendo DS, Wii, Xbox Kinect or PS3 seem to be on every young boy's letter to Santa, no matter if parents (mums) like it or not. The pros and cons of these interactive videogames are numerous. However, when used in moderation (such as all enjoyable things in life) and under parental guidance (dads are often keen volunteers) they can be entertaining and even educational. There are plenty of good games around with an educational twist and stimulating motor skills. Of course, parents will have to make up their own mind whether to buy a Nintendo or Wii for Christmas or not, but they also have to accept that their children grow up with computer games and will get confronted with them anyway, at their home or elsewhere. Maybe the best solution is to allow controlled access and often this will help raise their interest in other cool toys again.

Here are some Christmas present ideas that will make your 'big' boy do a 'big' jump.
